Sagar-Runi case: HC drops progress, bail hearing from list

Sagar-Runi has been killed at their Rajarbazar house

The High Court has dropped the progress and bail plea hearing of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi murder case from its cause list.

The High Court bench of Justice Shawkat Hossain and Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam passed the order saying this bench has no jurisdiction to hear the bail petitions.

On February 18, a High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Mohammad Ullah ordered for the progress report to be produced on March 5.

The bench had summoned investigation officer Zafar Ullah to produce the report in regard to the bail plea for detained suspects Bakul Miah, Rafiqul Islam and Kamrul.

Later, Justice Enayetur Rahim was made the chairman for International Crimes Tribunal 1.

Lawyer for the suspects Masud Hossain said he approached Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hussain for a new court to hear the bail plea.

“Chief justice’s High Court division Secretary Kabir Hossain referred us to the bench of Justice Shawkat verbally,” Masud said.

After the matter was taken to the bench of Justice Shawkat and Justice Mustafa Zaman on Wednesday, the judges said the matter was out of their “jurisdiction.”

The hearing commenced from 2:20pm.

“There are two segments to the hearing, the bail plea and the progress report,” the bench observed. “We can hear the progress report but not the bail plea.”

“We will only hear the plea after the chief justice asks us to,” the bench said. In the end the progress report and bail plea were binned from the cause list.

Masud Hossain said there would be no more hearing for Wednesday.
