Road crashes kill 16 during Eid holiday

Sixteen people were killed and many others injured in separate road accidents in different districts during the three-day Eid holiday from Tuesday.

 

Of them, seven were killed on Tuesday while three on Wednesday and the rest on Thursday.

 

In Sylhet, five people were killed and eight others injured as a bus crashed into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Goalabazar under Osmaninagar Police Station on Tuesday night.

 

Three of the deceased were identified as Lekhon Mia, 35, of Tajpur in Osmaninagar, Khawja Abdur Razzaq, 65, and Ojior Rahman, 35, of Adittapur in Balaganj.

 

All the deceased were the occupants of the three-wheeler.

 

Witnesses said the Sylhet-bound bus of ‘Ahmed Paribahan’ from Dhaka rammed the auto-rickshaw around 10pm as its driver lost control over the steering.

 

Later, the bus crashed into a roadside tree, leaving three people dead on the spot and injuring 10 others.

 

Of the injured, the auto-rickshaw driver died on the way to hospital while a passenger was declared brought at Osmaninagar hospital.

 

Outraged by the accident, locals torched the bus and blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway for an hour. They also damaged several buses on the highway.

 

Later, the agitating locals withdrew the blockade following intervention by police and elites.

 

In the capital, a middle-aged tribal woman was crushed under the wheels of a moving bus in the city’s Bhatara area on Thursday morning.

 

The victim was identified as Bisotee, 42, wife of Zohon Chambo Gong of Garo para under Fulpur Police Station in Mymensingh district.

 

Contacted, sub-inspector Fariduzzaman of Bhatara police station said the accident took place when the woman was crossing the road in front at Nadda bus stop in Basundhara residential area at about 7:15 am.

 

Later, police recovered the body sent it to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue.

 

In Comilla, a man was killed and three others were injured as a train hit a van at Shihar level crossing in Nangalkot upazila on Thursday morning.

 

The deceased, van driver M Momin Hossain, 20, son of Madhu Miah, hailed from Panchgatia village in Sadar upazila of Feni, while the injured were passengers of the vehicle.

 

Officer-in-charge (OC) M Shahid Ullah of Laksam Railway Police Station said the Sylhet-bound train, ‘Paharika Express’, from Chittagong hit the van at the unmanned crossing on Dhaka-Chittagong route around 11am, killing Momin on the spot and injuring its three passengers.

 

The injured were admitted to Nangalkot Upazila Health Complex where their condition was stated to be critical.

 

In another accident in the district, a worker was killed and 14 people were injured when a bus of ‘Al-Baraka Paribahan’ ploughed through a tea stall in Choigharia area of Chandina upazila around 9am.

 

The deceased was identified as Abul Kasem, 30, son of Aiez Uddin of the area.

 

Police said the bus crashed into the teashop as its driver lost control over the steering.

 

In Naogaon, two motorcyclists were killed when a speedy pickup ran into their bike in Nilkuti area of Manda upazila around 1:30pm on Thursday.

 

The deceased were identified as Parimal Chandra, 30, son of Srimanta Chandra, and Jagadis Chandra, 25, son of Jutish Chandra of Dusati village in the upazila.

 

The bodies were sent to the district hospital morgue for autopsy.

 

A case filed in this connection.

 

In Chuadanga, a man, aged around 45, was killed as a locally made vehicle, Nasiman, loaded with passengers ran over him on Darshana-Jibannagar road at Tamaltala in Damurhuda upazila around 5:30pm on Thursday.

 

The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

 

In Pabna, a head-on collision between two motorcycles at Muladuli Ambagan area in Iswardi upazila left two people dead and another person injured on Wednesday night.

 

The deceased were identified as Raja, 19, son of Joynul Bhuiyan of Kumargari village in Atgharia upazila, and Mati, 23, son of Mahmud Ali of Narayanpur village in Boraigram upazila of Natore.

 

Officer-in-charge of Iswardi Police Station Biman Kumar Dash said the two motorbikes collided head-on in the area around 8:30pm, leaving three riders injured.

 

Of them, Raja and Mati succumbed to their injuries at Boraigram Upazila Health Complex.

 

In Chittagong, a young lawyer was killed and 10 people were injured as a bus carrying a bridal party overturned at Pukuria in Banshkhali upazila on Wednesday night.

 

The victim is Pujan Bhattecharjee, 28, son of late freedom fighter Advocate Pradip Bhattecharjee.

 

OC of Banshkhali Police Station Abdus Salam said the accident occurred when the victims were going to a community centre in Chittagong city to attend a wedding party, leaving 11 people injured.

 

Of the injured, Pujan and another were rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead at about 11pm.

 

In Magura, Milan Biswas, 30, son of Pachu Biswas of Mandartala village in Sripur upazila, was killed in a road accident at Magura Bus Stand around 9pm on Tuesday.

 

Jahangir Alam, officer-in-charge of Magura Sadar Police Station, said Milan was run over a bus when he tried to get onto the vehicle, leaving him dead on the spot.

 

Police recovered the body and sent it to the district hospital morgue for autopsy.

 

A case was filed in this connection.

 

In Bhola, a young man was killed in a road accident at Dauri Bazar in Borhanuddin upazila on Bhola-Charfashion road early Tuesday.

 

Witnesses said the accident took place when a motorcycle crashed into a roadside tree around 6am, leaving the motorcyclist dead on the spot.

 

The victim could not be identified immediately.

 

Officer-in-charge of Borhanuddin Police Station Enayet Hossain said relatives of the deceased had taken away the body before the police appeared on the spot.
