Rana Plaza site can’t be returned to owner: Nanak

Rana-Plaza

State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives adv Jahangir Kabir Nanak on Thursday said the land on which Rana Plaza had been built cannot be returned to Rana as the garment workers bloodspots are there in the tragic site.

Indicating that the land will be confiscated, he said the government is planning to build a monument at the site in honour of the workers who lost their lives following the biggest tragedy in the RMG sector.

Nanak was addressing a reminiscence programme at BGMEA auditorium in the city remembering the 100-day of the tragedy.

Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour and Employment Ministry M Israfil Alam, founder of Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed (CRP) Valerie A Taylor, Director of National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) Prof Dr KH Abdul Awal Rizvi, Chairman of Enam Medical Dr Enamur Rahman, Bangladesh Diabetic Samity President Prof Dr AK Azad Khan, Dhaka Medical College Director Brig General Mustafizur Rahman, Director of Prime Minister’s Office Dr M Zulfikar Ali, Somokal Editor Golam Sarwar and BGMEA vice president Reaz-Bin-Mahmood (Sumon), among others, spoke the programme held with BGMEA President M Atiqul Islam in the chair.

Nanak said there was a conspiracy to blame the government of concealing bodies but nobody had been able to fish in the troubled water as the government and media played a very active role. “It was a big challenge for the government to handle the situation. We did it with the support of people from all walks of life,” he said.

He said the government did not spare anybody responsible for the Rana Plaza collapse. “Even the engineers and mayor haven’t been spared.”

Nanak alleged that there are still conspiracies to destroy the RMG industry and thus put over 40 lakh people dependent on the sector into an immense trouble. “We’ll resolve all the problems of the sector and make it stronger ensuring better ties among workers, owners and the government.”

He said the government has taken an initiative for a garment village in Boushia, Munshiganj. “Some 550 acres of land have already been acquired to this end.”
