Hours after they went on an indefinite strike protesting a court order sending one of their fellows to jail, doctors in the city on Friday night postponed their strike until Sunday as the administration assured them of realising the arrested physician.

The decision came after a meeting between the striking doctors and the administration at kukijar Community Centre in the city on Friday night.

The physicians postponed the strike considering sufferings of the patients, said Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) unit president of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Dr SR Tarafder.

Earlier, medical services at the government and privately-run hospitals and clinics in the city came to a halt as doctors went on the indefinite strike on Friday morning protesting the court order sending a doctor who is also the owner of a clinic to jail.

Seven organisations, including RMCH BMA and Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad, had earlier on Thursday evening announced the strike at a press briefing at Laxmipur Mukti Clinic in the city demanding the release of Dr Samiul Haque Shimul, owner of Dolphin Clinic, by 10am today (Friday).

At the press briefing, they threatened that medical services at all the public and private hospitals and clinics in the city would remain suspended and doctors would abstain from their duties until Dr Shimul was released.

On Thursday, Rajshahi Chief Metropolitan Magistrate sent Dr Samiul Haque Shimul to jail after rejecting his bail petition in a case filed in connection with the death of a patient in his clinic.

Anwarul Haque Tipu, 35, son of Ajgar Ali of Sheikhtola of Shibganj upazila, died at about 10:30 pm on Wednesday while he was undergoing treatment for a broken leg at Dolphin Clinic.

Incensed at his death, the patient’s relatives aided by some locals vandalised the clinic.
