No polls under Hasina: Rafiqul

BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah on Thursday said they will not allow the next national election to be held under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“Sheikh Hasina scrapped the caretaker government system realising that her party has no scope of returning to power. BNP won’t allow holding any election keeping her in power,” he told a discussion.

Jatiya Gonotantrik Party (Jagpa) arranged the discussion on the ongoing political crisis at Dhaka Reporter’s Unity (DRU).

Referring to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s recent telephonic conversation with the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader, Rafiqul said, “The UN chief has given a message that a causal election won’t be acceptable. It must be held in a free and fair manner with the participation of all.”

He warned the government that the county will fall into a disaster if it fails to understand the message of the UN Secretary General. “You’ll have to shoulder the responsibility of any thing bad due to your obstinacy.”

The BNP leader alleged that the government annulled the caretaker government system only using its majority in parliament just to cling to power though it had no people’s mandate.

Criticising Textiles and Jute Minister Abdul Latif Siddique for his call to kill those who call hartat, Rafiqul said, “How does he stay in the cabinet after threatening to kill the country’s citizens?”

The BNP leader termed the incumbent Election Commission a government subservient institution and said it took a move to amend the RPO at the behest of the current regime. “The EC wants to hold the polls under the Prime Minister. So, we won’t go to polls under the incumbent Prime Minister and the Election Commission.”
