Khaleda renews threat to resist current regime

Criticising the government for what she said its misrule and repressive acts, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday renewed her threat to wage a united resistance against the current regime after the upcoming Eid.

“The rule of Awami League is the rule of killings, forced disappearances and repressive acts. We’ll put up a united resistance together with people against this repressive government after Eid. The country’s people and Allah are with us. Our victory is inevitable,” she said.

Khaleda, a former Prime Ministers, was addressing an Iftar party arranged by Jatiya Ganotantrik Party (Jagpa), a partner of the BNP-led 20-party alliance at a city hotel.

She said the current ‘illegal’ government wants to hang onto power resorting to killings, forced disappearances and looting. “There’s no legitimate government in the country. The current regime has grabbed power by force and is illegally holding office.”

The BNP chief alleged that law enforcers and ruling party cadres tried to abduct Dhaka Reporters’ Unity president Shahed Chowdhury on his return to his office from an Iftar party hosted by her.

“The ruling party cadres and members of Rab and police tried to make Dhaka Reporters’ Unity president disappeared when he was returning to his office after joining the Iftar party I hosted in honour of editors and heads of different media,” she said.

The former Prime Minister said the country’s people are going through a critical time as the government is busy looting and killing people instead of doing welfare of people and developing the country.

“The rate of unemployment is growing alarmingly. People are going through immense ordeal due to unusual price hike of essentials. The roads and highways have become unusable, but the usurper government is least bothered about all these problems”

Referring to the Narayanganj seven murders, Khaleda said the government is yet to arrest the killers. “Those arrested in this connection kept with son-in-law’s hospitality fearing that if they are properly interrogated they’ll disclose the names of big fishes of the ruling party involved in it.”

She also said the Prime Minister who is also in charge of the Home Ministry cannot avoid the responsibility for the seven murders and other incidents of killing and enforced disappearance.

The BNP chief said the remarks of the ministers and ruling party leaders suggest that they want to cling to power forever by resorting to killings and repressive acts. “But no repressive regime in any country could hang onto power forever, and this regime won’t be able to do so either.”

Khaleda asked the ruling party leaders to create a democratic environment in the country as per the hopes and aspirations of people shunning tall talks and falsehoods.

Senior leaders of BNP and the 20-party alliance also took part in the Iftar party.

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Jamiruddin Sircar, ASM Hannan Shah, Rafiqul Islam Miah, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan, BNP vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman, Jagpa President Shafiul Alam Prodhan, Jamaat central leader Aminul Islam, Islami Oikya Jote chairman Abdul Latif Nezami, Khelafat Majlish ameer Principal Muhammad Ishaq, Kalyan Party chief Syed Muhammad Ibrahim, NPP president Shawkat Hossain Nilu, Labour party chairman Mustafizur Rahman Iran and Islamic Party chief Abdul Mobin were, among others, present.
