Khaleda in ‘ferocious’ role to save war criminals: Ashraful

Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam on Tuesday said BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has taken up the ‘most ferocious role’ in saving the war criminals.

“It’s unfortunate but true that two times former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has taken up the most ferocious role in foiling the trial of war criminals and saving the war criminals from the very beginning,” he said.

The AL general secretary made the remarks while talking to reporters after paying tributes to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing wreaths at the National Mausoleum.

Ashraf said Jamaat does not have such strength that they will kill minorities or foil the trials of war criminals. “Their strength is Begum Khaleda Zia’s strength. She has taken all steps to foil the trial by utilising her that power.”

Pointing finger at Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, he said there is no country in the world where war criminals who got defeated in the war are rehabilitated in politics. “It’s only Bangladesh where they’re still doing politics after 42 years of their defeat in the Liberation War.”

On Khaleda’s recent comment on army, Ashraful said it is unprecedented. “I doubt whether any democratic country in the world had seen such an incident in the past.”

He said Khaleda would have faced a sedition case if such an incident had taken place elsewhere in the world.

Responding to a question whether legal action will be taken against Khaleda for her remark, Ashraful said Bangladesh is a peculiar country where one can go untouched making any comment.

Ashrful, also the LGRD Minister, urged all to get united again to help finish the trial of war criminals.
