Kamruzzaman wins Narsingdi polls

Kamruzzaman, brother of slain mayor Lokman Hossain, won the municipality mayoral by-election with a huge margin on Thursday.

The winner bagged 35,569 votes while his nearest contestant Montaz Uddin Bhuiyan, president of Narsingdi city Awami League, got 13,813 in all 31 centres.

In her instant reaction, Nursat Tamanna Bubli, wife of the slain mayor, expressed her gratefulness to all people of Narsingdi for voting in Kamruzzaman.

“They’ve not betrayed with the blood of Lokman. They have duly evaluated his works. I’m astounded,” she said when Kamruzzaman was unofficially declared winner of the election.

Earlier the voting for the seat, vacated following the killing of Lokman Hossain, without any major violence.

“Voting in all 31 centres ended almost peacefully,” Returning Officer Md Abdul Wadud told reporters at his office.

People started voting using the electronic voting machines (EVM) at 8:00am, which continued till 4:00pm without any break.

Kamruzzaman, who is contesting the poll with support from Awami League leaders, cast his vote at Madrashaye Gausia Peshoaria Sunnia polling centre around 10:00am.

Montaz Uddin is backed by Posts and Telecommunications Minister Raji Uddin Ahmed and district AL president Asaduzzaman.

It was alleged that supporters of Montaz Ali attacked candidate Kamruzzaman’s nephew Raihan Ahmed Lony and his supporters Bappi Saha and Raju Saha when they were going to the polling centre.

The attackers beat up the trio and also hit Raju with a pistol in his face.

Montaz’s supporters left the place when a patrol team of Rapid Action Battalion rushed to the spot, magistrate Helaluddin told The Daily Star.

Meher Sarwar Morshed, regional election officer of Dhaka, said people have cast their votes so swiftly due to the EVM.

He mentioned 60 people cast their votes in first 20 minutes at Radiant School polling centre while 337 in first one hour and 20 minutes at Bholanagar Primary School.

The Election Commission has conducted a survey in the municipal area on the effectiveness of the machine.

He said the voter turnout was 65 percent till 3:00pm.

Webcams were installed at the booths to ensure free and fair election.

The main opposition BNP did not participate in the election protesting the election commission’s decision to use EVM and for not deploying the army.

Security was beefed up in the pourasava area. Rapid Action Battalion set up check post at the entrance of the town. They used dog squad in this purpose.

A team comprised of a judicial magistrate, 16 executive magistrates and over 250 members of Rapid Action Battalion were deployed in the poll centres throughout the voting time.

Lokman Hossain, also an Awami League leader, was shot dead by unknown assailants on November 1 in the Narsingdi Awami League office.
