JCD President Rajib arrested with yaba, sent to jail

The JCD announces a two-day nationwide demonstration programme, protesting the detention

Police have arrested Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) President Rajib Ahsan and five other persons along with yaba tablets from Lebughat ferry terminal in Patuakhali district.

Confirming the detention, Patuakhali Additional Police Super Fayez Ahmed told the Dhaka Tribune: “We had information that JCD President Rajib, who is an accused in several cases, left Barisal for Kuakata by a white-coloured private car and he was carrying narcotics inside it.

“Acting on the information, a team of Dumki police stopped his private car at the ferry ghat around 11:30pm Sunday and picked him up along with five other youths. The law enforcers also seized 45 pieces of yaba tablets and a bottle of wine from their possession.”

The other five arrestees are Md Salahuddin, Md Rafiqul Islam, Syed Jasim Uddin, Saiful Islam, car driver Ashim Hawlader.

While addressing a press briefing at his office around 2pm Monday, the police official said the police took Rajib to the headquarters of the district Detective Branch and grilled him for two hours.

After the press briefing, Rajib was taken to the Sadar police station around 3pm. A case was filed under Narcotic Control Act in the afternoon.

Later, the Dumki police produced Rajib and his accomplices before a district court.

The court of Patuakhali Senior Judicial Magistrate HM Tarek Shams sent the accused to jail, rejecting their bail pleas. The court fixed Tuesday for further hearing.

When contacted, JCD Office Secretary Abdus Sattar told the Dhaka Tribune that Rajib was arrested while he was returning to Dhaka from Patuakhali.

“Rajib went to Patuakhali to meet one of his relatives after meeting his kith and kin at his native home in Mehendiganj of Barisal.”

Following the detention, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of the BNP, announced a two-day nationwide demonstration programme.

As part of the programme, they will stage protest in all the universities across the country on Tuesday while in all other educational institutes on Wednesday.

“The government has staged the drama just to conceal the misdeeds and immoral activities of the members of the Chhatra League, student wing of the Awami League,” Nazmul Hasan, JCD vice-president, told journalists at a press briefing at organisation’s Nayapaltan headquarters on Monday evening.

Nazmul alleged that the drama was staged to tarnish the popularity and image of the JCD. “We harshly condemned such arrest.”
