The names of three Awami League leaders, excluding Helina Hayat Ivy who, a popular figure in Narayanganj politics,  have been proposed as mayoral candidates for the upcoming Narayanganj City Corporation polls.

The names were proposed at an extended meeting of Awami League held at Narayanganj Circuit House yesterday afternoon.

The proposed candidates are Anwar Hossain, Awami League district unit president, Mojibur Rahman, president of Siddhirganj upzila unit Awami League, and MA Rashid, Bandar upzila unit president.

The meeting was presided over by Chandon Shil, acting president of Nrayanganj city unit Awami League.

Chandon Shil said that they had proposed the names of three leaders following a direction of Awami League central committee.

Replying to a question, he said: “We did not put the name of Helina Hayat Ivy in the list, as nobody, who were present at the meeting, did not proposed her name as mayoral candidate of the city.”  When contacted, Ivy denied making any comment over the matter.

Central committee has asked the city Awami League to propose the names of three candidates considering their acceptance and popularity by November 20.

Narayanganj City Corporation will go to polls on December 22, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad made the announcement of polls schedule at the media centre of the Election Commission Secretariat on Monday.

As per the schedule, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers is November 24, while the date for the scrutiny of the nomination papers is on November 26-27 and the last date for the withdrawal of candidature is December 4.

The election symbol will be allocated among the contestants on December 5.

The maiden election to NCC was held on October 30, 2011. Dr Selina Hayat Ivy was elected country’s first female city mayor defeating Awami League-backed candidate Shamim Osman.

After the announcement of the election, leaders and activists of the Awami League have got involved in election-related activities.

Insiders of the party said although the list has been made by some leaders, who are loyal to Shamim Osman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would be ultimate decision maker.

Moreover, BNP leaders are waiting for the green single from Party Chief Khaleda Zia over the participation of the city polls.

Earlier, there was rumor that Selina Hayat Ivymay might get nomination.

Party sources said the doctor turned politician had already gained confidence from party’s high-ups because of her development works and popularity in the city and she had been upgraded as deputy minister.

Insiders of the Awami League said party chief might choose Ivy for contesting in the election, as the government had given Tk191 crore special allocation for city development which was a proof that Awami League decision makers had soft corners for Ivy.

In the previous city corporation election held on October 30, 2011, six candidates took part in the poll where Selina Hayat Ivy defeated Awami League-nominated candidate Shamim Osman by over 100,000 votes.

BNP-nominated candidate Taimur Alam Khandakar withdrew himself from that election just seven hours before of the polls.

Local sources said the incumbent mayor of the city corporation Dr Selina Hayat Ivy, Awami League city unit President Anwar Hossain, district unit BNP President Taimur Alam Khandakar, former MP Abul Kalam, Biplobi Workers’ Party leader Advocate Mahbubur Rahman Ismail may contest in the upcoming city election.

Shamim Osman, also an influential component in Narayanganj politics, has recently said he would support Anwar Hossain in the election, though Anwar worked for Ivy in the previous city election.

BNP sources said two leaders – Taimur Alam Khandakar and Abul Kalam – would seek nomination from the party.

  1. Take a break, Ivy.
Leave this murky place to the crawling rats & find yourself in healthcare for the poor, anywhere in the world, Africa in particular. Yu have tremendous potential on the global stage. Get out of this rotten pond & go out to the open sea. Good luck.
