Impose ban on Hefajat’s Dhaka siege: Ulema-Mashayekh to govt

News - Impose ban on Hefajat’s Dhaka siege: Ulema-Mashayekh to govt

Bangladesh Ulema-Mashayekh Oikya Jote on Thursday urged the government to impose a ban on Hefajat’s all programmes, including its May 5 Dhaka siege, as it what they said wants to create anarchy in the country through the programmes.

Abdul Halim Seraji, president of the outfit, made the call at a roundtable discussion at the National Press Club.

He alleged that Jamaat-Shibir is using Hefajat ameer Allama Shah Ahmed Shafi to create religious fanaticism in the country.

Halim also urged the government to give exemplary punishment to Sohel Rana, owner of Rana Plaza, local MP Talukder Towhid Jong Murad and others who are responsible for Rana Plaza collapse.

Meanwhile, Dawat-e-Islami, an Islamist group, urged Hefajat-e-Islam Bangladesh to cancel its scheduled ‘Dhaka Siege’ programme on May 5 as it may create disorder in the country.

Maulana Jahirul Islam Miah, convener of Dawat-e-Islami, made the call while addressing a press conference at the National Press Club.

Jahirul also suggested that Hefajat leaders sit in a dialogue with the government over their demands.

He also criticised Hefajat for not including the trial of the war criminals in its 13-point demand.

In the biggest-ever showdown by Islamists in recent times, Hefajat-e-Islam Bangladesh on April 6 gave the government until April 30 to meet its 13-point demand or face a ‘Dhaka Siege’ programme on May 5.
