News - ILO assures of all-out support for capacity building
 International Labour Organization (ILO) on Wednesday assured Bangladesh of extending its all-out support for capacity building to protect the interests of the workers, including the rehabilitation of the Savar tragedy victims.

ILO Deputy Director General Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo gave the assurance during a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the VIP room of Osmani Memorial Auditorium after a May Day discussion.

PM’s press secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed reporters after the meeting.

The ILO DDG, also the former Prime Minister of West African country Togo, handed over an ILO letter, to the Prime Minister expressing deep condolence and sympathy to the people of Bangladesh over the Savar incident.

He appreciated the efforts of Bangladesh to start the rescue operation immediately after the building collapse on April 24 and hoped that the victims will get full and prompt compensations.

Narrating the background of building collapse incident, the Prime Minister said the complex was not constructed with a plan from the authorities concerned.

Saying that the life of every worker is valuable to her, Hasina informed him that those responsible for the building crash have already been brought to book and they would get exemplary punishment.

She also mentioned that the government has taken short-, medium- and long-term measures to provide the injured workers proper medical facilities after the rescue and for their proper rehabilitation.

The Prime Minister pointed out that the labour policy framed by the government has given the highest importance to the workers’ interests.

In this connection, she said the government soon after assuming office in 2009 has taken steps for increasing the wages of the workers and their other benefits.

The Prime Minister sought all-out ILO support to implement the programmes taken by the government for the welfare of the workers.

Labour and Employment Minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju and State Minister Begum Munnujan Sufian were present on the occasion.
