Hilsa price rises before Pahela Baishakh

The price of hilsa increased on the retail market in the capital Dhaka over the week ending Friday as the demand for the fish was increasing on the eve of Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bangla new year that falls on April 14.

The demand for hilsa increases in the period every year as a large number of people consider the fish an essential part of the Bangla new year celebration, traders said.
Bimol Chandra, a hilsa trader at Karwan Bazar kitchen market, told New Age on Friday that the price of hilsa increased up to Tk 300 a kilogram over the week as the demand for the fish had started to increase since last week with the Pahela Baishakh approaching.
He predicted that the increased trend of the hilsa price would continue till April 14.
The price of a hilsa weighing around 700 grams to 800 grams increased by Tk 200 a piece  and was selling at Tk 100-Tk 1,100 a piece on Friday.
A piece of hilsa weighing 1 kg to 1.2 kg increased by Tk 300 a kg and was selling at Tk 1,500-Tk 2,000 on the day.
A hilsa weighing around 500 grams to 600 grams increased by Tk 100-Tk 200 a  kg was selling at Tk 650 to Tk 850 a kg at the Shantinagar kitchen market on Friday.
The prices of other fish remained unchanged. Rohita was selling at Tk 200-Tk 300 a kg, katla at Tk 200-Tk 280 a kg, pangas at Tk 120-Tk 170 a kg and tilapia at Tk 110-Tk 180 a kg, depending on their size and quality.
The prices of vegetables remained stable over the week.
Aubergine was retailing at Tk 30-Tk 40 a kg, bitter gourd at Tk 50 a kg, cucumber at Tk 40 a kg, okra at Tk 40 a kg, papaya at Tk 30 a kg, carrot at Tk 20 a kg and tomato at Tk 30 a kg on Friday.
The price of green chilli remained unchanged and the item was retailing at Tk 60 a kg on the day.
Egg price remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 30-Tk 32 a hali (four pieces) on Friday.
Price of beef remained high and it was selling at Tk 350-Tk 380 a kg while mutton was selling at Tk 450-Tk 550 a kg.
Broiler price remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 150-Tk 160 a kg on Friday while the locally-bred hens were selling at Tk 350-Tk 360 a piece weighing from 800 grams to one kg.
Prices of onion remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 35 a kg on the day while the imported onion was selling at Tk 30 a kg.
The price of imported garlic was selling at Tk 80-Tk 90 a kg while the newly-harvested local garlic was retailing at Tk 50 a kg on the day.
The fine variety of red lentil was selling at Tk 115 a kg while its local variety was selling at Tk 115 a kg.
The price of red lentil imported from Turkey and Canada was selling at Tk 95 a kg over the week.
Price of potato increased by Tk 2 a kg and the item was selling at Tk 14-Tk 20 a kg on the day.
Sugar was selling at Tk 45-Tk 48 a kg on Friday.
The price of bottled soya bean oil remained unchanged. A one-litre container of soya bean oil was selling at Tk 100-Tk 105 while a five-litre container was selling at Tk 500 in the city’s Karwan Bazar kitchen market on Friday. Unpacked soya bean oil was retailing at Tk 90-Tk 95 a litre while refined plum oil was selling at Tk 74-Tk 76 a litre on the day.
The fine variety of BR-28 rice was selling at Tk 46-Tk 48 a kg and the coarse variety was selling at Tk 42-Tk 44 a kg on Friday.
The fine variety of miniket rice was selling at Tk 50-Tk 53 a kg while the coarse variety was retailing at Tk 47-Tk 48 a kg.
The fine variety of najirshail was selling at Tk 55-Tk 58 a kg and the coarse variety was retailing at Tk 46-Tk 52 a kg on the day.
The coarse variety of rice was retailing at Tk 32-Tk 37 a kg over the week.
