Hefazat-e-Islam issues ultimatum to stop Shahbagh demo

Jamaat-e-Islami’s ally Hefazat-e-Islam has announced it would hold mass rallies in all upazila headquarters on March 1 if the government does not stop the Shahbagh movement and free its detained leaders and activists by this month.

The announcement came from a rally at Parbati High School in Hathazari upazila of Chittagong Monday afternoon.

The organisation also threatened of organising long march towards Dhaka from different parts of the country and holding a rally of imams in the capital in the next month to press home its demand.

The party also demanded resignation of Home Minister MK Alamgir.

Name of the organisation came to the fore after the ongoing Shahbagh movement demanded ban of Jamaat-e-Islami’s politics.

It published a half-page advertisement of Hefazat-e-Islam containing highly offensive texts, which looks like online posts, claiming that the Shahbagh movement was against Islam. It also demanded death penalty for the organisers of the Shahbagh protest.

On Friday, activists of Hefazat-e-Islam took part in post-Juma prayer violence across the country, assaulting law enforcers, journalists and TV camerapersons.
