News - Hearing on bail petitions of 44 oppn leaders Apr 1
A Dhaka court will hear on April 1 two bail petitions of 44 leaders of the BNP-led 18-party alliance in two cases filed with Paltan Police Station.
M Zahurul Haque, Judge of the Metropolitan Session Judges Court, fixed the date after a brief hearing of the petitions filed by Sanaullah Miah, counsel for the opposition leaders, on March 25 challenging the orders of two lower courts placing 151 opposition men on remand and sending three others to jail.
The 44 leaders include BNP joint secretaries general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Amanullah Aman and Md Shajahan, Opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abedin Farroque, BNP leader Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, and Jatiya Ganatantrik Party chief Shafiul Alam Pradhan.
On March 20, Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Ali Hossain and Keshob Roy Chowdhury rejected the bail petitions of 154 leaders and activists of the opposition alliance arrested from the BNP Nayapaltan central office on March 11.
The two courts placed 151 of the opposition men on an eight-day remand and sent three others to jail in the two cases – one filed under the Speedy Tribunal Act and the other under Explosive Substance Act.
On March 12, police filed the cases against 154 leaders of the 18-party opposition alliance on charges of exploding bombs and preventing police from performing their official duties.
On March 24, police pressed charges against 148 of the opposition men in the case filed under the Speedy Tribunal Act.
