HC stays REHAB polls

high-court

The High Court on Monday stayed for three months the elections to Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh (REHAB) scheduled to be held on May 31.

An HC bench comprising Justice Dr Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain passed the order after the primary hearing of a writ petition.

The court also issued a rule upon persons concerned to explain as to why the publication of 21 candidates dropping 56 other valid ones should not be declared illegal.

The Commerce Secretary, the REHAB Election Board and the FBCCI Arbitration Board, among others, have been asked to come with the reply within four weeks.

The REHAB Election Board published the list of 77 valid candidates on May 7. However, the board published the final list of 21 candidates dropping the names of others on May 14, the last date of withdrawal of candidacy.

On the day, Prof Abu Yusuf Mohammad Abdullah, chairman of ‘Prasad Nirman Ltd’, wanted to know from the board the reason behind dropping him although he did not withdraw the candidature.

Later, he moved the FBCCI Arbitration Board which heard the matter on May 22. However, it did not pass any order in this regard.

Finally, the realtor filed the writ with the High Court on Monday.
