Hasina leaves NY for London

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left New York on Monday for London wrapping up her eight-day official visit to the USA to attend the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

A US Air flight, carrying the prime minister, left John F Kennedy International Airport at 7:15am (local time) for London. She will stay in London for two days and return home on Thursday (Oct 2).

Bangladesh ambassador to the USA Mohammad Ziauddin and Bangladesh permanent representative to the UN AK Abdul Momen and a large number of expatriate Bangladeshis saw the prime minister off at the airport.

Sheikh Hasina arrived in New York on September 22 and addressed the UNGA on September 27 seeking the international community’s support for the ongoing trial process of war criminals in Bangladesh for the sake of justice, human rights and the rule of law.

The premier along with the world leaders joined a reception hosted by US president Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. She also joined a reception and luncheon hosted by UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon.

Hasina attended the inaugural session of the Climate Summit-2014 and delivered speech at the ‘National Action and Ambition Announcement’ session of the Summit. She also took part in a high-level discussion of the Global Education First Initiative (GEFI) and delivered speech there.

The prime minister met US business leaders urging them to create a new business partnership with Bangladesh to help it become a middle-income country by 2021.

She joined a discussion of the Commonwealth Heads of Government and attended a summit on international peacekeeping operation at the UN Headquarters.

She joined a gala function at UN Headquarters marking the 40th anniversary of Bangladesh’s membership to the United Nations.

On the sidelines of the UNGA, Sheikh Hasina held meetings with UN secretary general Ban ki-moon, her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, Norwegian prime minister Erna Solberg, Belarusian prime minister Mikhal V Myasnikovich and Nepalese prime minister Sushil Koirala.

She also attended a reception accorded by expatriate Bangladeshis living in the USA.
