Govt wants judge impeachment law to hush up its misdeed: Khaleda

She says her party will surely wage a movement

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday night alleged that the government has taken the move to restore parliament’s power to impeach Supreme Court judges in a bid to hush up its misdeeds.

“Now the judges are controlled by the government. They’ve to work as per the direction of it. Even after that, the regime can’t depend on the judges and they’re now trying to re-empower parliament to sack judges only to hush their misdeeds,” she said.

Khaleda made the remarks while exchanging views with the BNP-supported upazila chairmen and vice-chairmen of Rangpur division at her Gulshan office.

She alleged that the Awami League, after illegally grabbing power, is making various laws one after another to cling power. “They’ve formulated the broadcast policy to control the media they’re going to give the illegal parliament power to impeach judges to control the judiciary.”

Mentioning that the illegal government has no right to enact any law, Khaleda said now law formulated by the current illegitimate regime will not sustain in the future.

The BNP chief warned the government that it will not be able to perpetuate its power by making new laws and policies.

She said the country is now in a very bad shape due to the misdeeds and misrule by the current government. “There is no democracy in the country now.”

Khaleda also a former Prime Minister said Awami League wants to snatch people’s right of expression so that no one can say about their wrongdoings. “They’re now trying to shut newspapers and TV channels in the name of broadcast policy as part of their move to re-establish one-party rule.”

Mentioning the sordid sate of roads across the country, she said the government has no attention to develop of the country. “The roads and highways are in very bad condition not only in the northern region but also all over the country, including the capital as the government is busy with killing, enforced disappearance and plundering public money.

Criticising the government for not holding the election to Dhaka City Corporation for the last 10 years, she alleged that the Dhaka city has turned into a city of garbage for lack of proper monitoring and authority.

Voicing her concern over the recent flood in the northern region, the BNP chief said the government is not standing beside people with necessary assistance and relief as it is least brother about people’s sufferings.

Pointing at the upazila chairmen and vice chairman she said, “You’re the real representatives of people, not the MPs as people did not elect them.”

She urged them to perform their duty sincerely and honestly and devote themselves for the welfare of people. “Don’t indulge in corruption. Action will be taken against those who will involve in graft.”

About her party’s anti-government campaign, Khaleda said, “Awami Leaders say BNP doesn’t know how to wage a movement. We ousted Ershad in 1990 through a strong movement while Awami League leaders made an entente with him”.

The BNP chairperson said they are making their organisation stronger for launching the movement. “We’ve said we’ll wage a movement and we’ll do it. But our movement won’t be violent one as Awami League did during in 2006.”

She called upon the party men to get united to force the current regime to quit and hold a fresh election under a non-party administration.

BNP standing committee members RA Gani, Jamiruddin Sircar, Lt Gen Mahbubur Rahman and BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir were, among others, present.
