The Commerce Ministry has decided to stop export of green chillies, eggplants, cucumbers and coriander leaves ahead of the month of Ramadan.
Commerce Secretary Mahbub Ahmed told bdnews24.com that the ban will start a week ahead of the month of fasting. “An order will be issued within Sunday.”
The decision came after a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the Commerce Ministry at Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday.
The Committee chief ABM Abul Kashem told media that demand for these commodities are usually high during Ramadan. “That is why the decision has been taken.”
“Reserve stocks of onion, dates and other essentials are adequate now. Supply is also normal. Price is not expected to go up during Ramadan.”
The committee will be monitoring markets from June 27, he said.
Kashem said he was sure price fluctuations and supply will be controlled properly during Ramadan this year. “We have recommended strict measures against hoarding and other illegal activities.”
A sharp rise in prices of essential commodities, especially foodstuff, has been witnessed in the past during Ramadan.
This year, the month of Ramadan is expected to begin during the first part of July.
