DEATH PENALTY AGAINST MOLLAH Victory of people: Gonojagoron Mancha

Gonojagoron Mancha participants celebrate as the Supreme Court enhances the punishment of Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah from life imprisonment to death penalty for wartime offences on Tuesday.

Imran H Sarker, convener of Gonojagoron Mancha, which was formed in February on the day Abdul Quader Mollah was given life sentence, said Tuesday’s Supreme Court verdict has fulfilled people’s desire.

“Justice has been done through this verdict. It is the result of our seven-month struggle,” Imran said after the Supreme Court awarded death penalty to the Jamaat assistant secretary general.

Shortly after the International Crimes Tribunal-2 awarded life-term jail imprisonment to Mollah on February 5, hundreds of youths gathered at Shahbagh intersection.

Terming “inadequate”, they launched a movement demanding death penalty to all war criminals and the protest eventually spread across the country.

“Sixteen million people of the country have rejected that verdict and took to the street for this demand,” the Mancha convener told journalists at Shahbagh intersection.

Pointing out that Mollah had flashed a victory sign after the February 5 judgement, he said: “Today’s verdict is the reply to the audacity he had shown by flashing V sign that day.”

He expressed hope that the authorities concerned would take initiative for execution of the verdict.
