City AL announces anti-Jamaat programme

Mofazzel Hossain Chowdhury Maya, general secretary to the Awami League Dhaka city unit, speaks at an extended meeting of the AL city unit at its Bangabandhu Avenue office in the capital on Sunday.
The Dhaka city unit of ruling Awami League on Sunday announced a one-and-a-half-month programme to resist what it said the evil effort of Jamaat-e-Islami to thwart the ongoing war crimes trial.

“Jamaat is carrying out attacks on people as well as police to foil the trial of war criminals and block the march forward of democracy in the country. We’re announcing the programmes in protest against their destructive acts,” said Mofazzel Hossain Chowdhury Maya, general secretary to the AL Dhaka city unit.

The programmes were chalked out at an extended meeting of the AL city unit at its Bangabandhu Avenue office in the capital.

The programmes that will begin on November 15 and continue till December 30 include bringing out processions in every ward on November 15 and every thana (police station) on November 19.

The city unit will also organise public rallies in 16 parliamentary constituencies of the capital from November 22 to December 30.

Maya warned that organisational steps will be taken if any ward or thana committee fail to observe the programme. “If any committee doesn’t observe programme, its activities will be suspended,” Maya said.

Addressing the meeting, state minister for Law Qamrul Islam said, “We’ll be there on the streets until the verdicts on war crimes cases are implemented.”

Terming BNP and Jamaat complement to each other, Qamrul said BNP will be on the streets overtly to save the war criminals as there will be no existence of BNP without Jamaat.

Awami League Dhaka city unit vice-president Foyez Uddin Mia, among others, also spoke at the meeting held with acting president MA Aziz in the chair.
