BNP warns of tough action if votes rigged

“The entire country” will be shaken through movement if the Election Commission failed to deliver, said BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Wednesday.

Supporters of candidates backed by the 19-Party alliance were being attacked and sued and the intensity had increased over the polls, he claimed.

The BNP leader urged the government to immediately stop such attacks.

The party and its allies are contesting the Upazila polls, although they boycotted the parliamentary elections, fearing the voting would not be fair under a Sheikh Hasina-led government.

The BNP won 44 chairman posts and its key ally Jamaat-e-Islami 13 in the first phase covering 97 Upazilas even though the party had alleged rigging.

Rizvi also criticised MPs who had said in Parliament on Tuesday that the BNP was aiding and abetting militancy in Bangladesh.

The MPs also demanded steps against Khaleda Zia, linking her to the snatching of JMB militants at Mymensingh’s Trishal.

“The government claims it has been rooting out militancy for the last five years. So, how could the snatching of militants take place in Mymensingh,” he asked.

Countering the MPs’, Rizvi said, “People know that the Awami League is a terrorist organisation and it is they who created militancy in Bangladesh.”

“People know it very well from which family top militant Shayakh Abdur Rahman comes from.”

Seven Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militants, including Rahman, were hanged for militant activities in 2007.
