BNP looking for alternative ways to assume power: Hanif

Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif on Monday alleged that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia prompts the army to capture power as she does not believe in democracy.

“They (BNP) don’t have the confidence in democracy and people. So, they’re looking for alternative ways to go to power, but people won’t allow them to make their plan successful,” he said.

Hanif, also a special assistant to the Prime Minister, was addressing an extended meeting of Dhaka city unit of Awami League at its party office at the city’s Bangabandhu Avenue.

While addressing a wayside rally at Matidali intersection of Bogra Sadar upazila on her way to Joypurhat on Sunday, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia said that the army would play their due role in due time.

Referring to Khaleda’s remark, Hanif said the opposition leader said this to kill democracy in the country.

At the meeting, State Minister for Law Quamrul Islam said the BNP chief’s remark was not only imprudent but also beyond political decorum.

Chaired by city AL vice-president Bazlur Rahman, the programme was addressed, among others, by its general secretary Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya and joint general secretary Haji Mohammad Selim.
