As part of the opposition’s eleventh hour-diplomatic efforts to have the January-5 general election halted, two BNP leaders on Sunday held a meeting with five foreign diplomats.

BNP vice chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury and chairperson’s adviser Sabihuddin Ahmed held the meeting with the envoys at a city hotel from 1pm to 2:45pm.

The diplomats of Canadian High Commission, the Netherlands Embassy, Australian High Commission and Korean Embassy in Dhaka attended the meeting.

However, it could not be confirmed who represented the British High Commission as High Commissioner Robert Gibson is on Christmas leave and out of town.

Asked about the meeting, Shamsher Mobin told UNB that it was not a formal meeting as they just took lunch together. “There’s no discussion on any specific issue.”

BNP sources, however, said the two party leaders discussed the country’s overall situation, EU decision not to send election observers, January-5 general election and the outcomes of the dialogue between the ruling and opposition delegations.

They also urged the diplomats not to cooperate with Sheikh Hasina’s government in holding the January-5 “farcical, one-sided” election.
