A local BNP leader and his daughter were killed allegedly by some outlawed party men in Mujibnagar upazila on Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Dr Helal Uddin, 40, joint secretary of Mujibnagar upazila unit of BNP, and his daughter Mitu, a second year student of Mujibnagar Degree College.

Quoting witnesses, police said a group of activists of the outlawed outfit Purbo Banglar Communist Party (Janajuddho- Bikash Group) hit Helal with sharp weapons indiscriminately when he was just entering his house at about 7.00am, leaving him dead on the spot.

The bandits also struck his daughter Mitu the same way as she came to his rescue.

They later left the scene blasting four bombs.

Mitu was rushed to Meherpur General Hospital where she died at about 12.30 am.

Rabiul Islam, officer-in-charge of Mujibnagar thana, said the reason behind the killing could not be known immediately.

The bodies were sent to Meherpur General Hospital morgue.

Superintendent of police Mozzaffar Hossain visited the spot.
