Grassroots leaders of the BNP expressed bitter resentment at the central leaders and Jamaat-e-Islami for their role during the January 5 election resist movement.

As part of reorganising the party, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and the central leaders have started to sit with the grassroots leaders and activists to listen to them and give them directives.

In the first phase, the leaders of 13 districts, thanas and municipalities will meet the chairperson. This phase will end on April 20.

Panchagarh, Nilphamari and Syedpur district BNP leaders held a meeting with the secretary generals and organising secretaries of the party yesterday at the party’s Nayapaltan headquarters. Then the district leaders held another meeting with the BNP chairperson at her Gulshan office at night.

Party sources said at the meeting, Khaleda formed the convening committees of Panchagarh and Syedpur district units and asked the leaders to form the Nilphamari district unit within the next one and a half months.

“I sought relief from the district committee. I just want to work as a member of the party. We have raised question about the role of the Jamaat and our central leaders at the meeting,” Mohajar Ali Prodhan, president of Panchagarh district unit, told the Dhaka Tribune.

Pointing finger to the central leaders, K Hasan, vice-president of the same unit, said: “If anyone becomes convener of a district unit, he cannot be president or general secretary of the district committee. If so, intra-party feud can never be eliminated.”

Mohammad Shamsuzzaman, member secretary of the Nilphamari district BNP, said they would hold council to form the full-pledged committee soon.

“The long-march towards Teesta Barrage will begin on April 23 under the leadership of acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. Later we will hold our council,” he told the Dhaka Tribune.

Asked about the district leaders’ grievances against the Jamaat, Zaman said: “First we should organise our party and when we are strong enough we can focus on the alliance partners. If there is no rice in my house now, how can I entertain others?”

Abdul Gafur Sarkar, president of the Syedpur district unit, said the district committee would be dissolved and a convening committee be formed soon to inject new blood in the movement.

“We said the grassroots leaders are all right, but the central leaders should now be active to launch a successful movement,” he told the Dhaka Tribune.
