BGMEA gets seven more months to demolish its building

The Appellate Division on Sunday gave the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association seven more months as the last deadline for demolishing its headquarters in Dhaka.

The 15-story BGMEA building was illegally constructed encroaching upon the Hatirjheel Lake.

A five-judge bench headed by acting chief justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah passed the order after BGMEA sought one more year to shift their office to Uttara where Rajuk allotted a plot to it.

This is for the third time the court extended the deadline for demolishing the building after dismissing the association’ s review petition against the demolition order.

The Appellate Division on September 11 extended the deadline for demolishing the building by 23 days as its six-month deadline expired on the day.

The deadline was set by the apex court on March 12 after rejecting BGMEA’s petition seeking review on its order to demolish the illegally constructed building.

On April 3, 2011, the High Court Division in its verdict asked the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha to demolish the building within 90 days and termed it as ‘a cancerous growth’ eclipsing the capital’s landmark lake Hatirjheel.

On June 2, 2016, the apex court upheld the High Court’s order and BGMEA was asked to dismantle its building at its own cost within the 90-day timeframe.

The apex court directed the Rajuk to demolish the building if the BGMEA was found noncompliant the directive and realise the cost from it.
