Maldivian police have recovered the dead body of a Bangladeshi maid from a house at Male, where the Housing Minister Dr Mohamed Muiz is said to reside, a news website reported on Monday.

Police are treating the death of the 24-year-old woman on Saturday as suicide for undisclosed reasons, according to English-language news website Minivan News.

Hours after the body was found, Police Commissioner Abdulla Riyaz stated on the social media site Twitter: “Police is investigating the suicide case.”

Sub-Inspector Hassan Haneef told the news website that the body had been found in an apartment on the ninth floor of Chandhanee House in Maafannu Ward.

The landlords of the property had employed the Bangladeshi national as a maid, Hassan said but could not confirm if the Minister resided in the house or own any accommodation within the building where the body was discovered.

Minivan News said the Minister was not responding to calls.

Haneef declined to disclose any more details on the case as it was being investigated, the website said.

“I cannot reveal any more until we complete our investigations. We will not come to any conclusions before that,” it quoted him as saying.
