The ruling Awami League has effectively been reduced to a solitary force after its coalition partner Jatiya Party announced its decision to contest the polls alone, BNP leader Moudud Ahmed says.
“Jatiya Party chief HM Ershad has said he would not go to polls under the incumbent government,” Moudud said at a programme in Dhaka on Friday.
“In this case, none but the Awami League will go to the polls, they are alone,” said Moudud.
Ershad on Wednesday told a Sylhet rally that his party would stay away from the national election if the BNP did not take part.
Moudud, a Deputy Prime Minister during Ershad’s autocratic regime in the ’80s, said it would not be possible for the ruling party to hold the election without amending the Constitution.

The BNP and its allies have been on the streets demanding the restoration of the non-party caretaker government provision scrapped by the 15th constitutional amendment.
They have threatened to boycott the polls if their demand is not met. The Awami League, on the other hand, has firmly stated that the forthcoming general election would be held under the current government.
As per the Constitution, the 10th parliamentary polls will be held between Oct 25 this year and Jan 24 next.
