AL does not want unity with BNP: Fakhrul

Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said the ruling Awami League would not forge any unity with BNP which was a true nationalist party.
Addressing a discussion, Fakhrul said the biggest failure of the government was that it yet could not create a national unity to face the challenge of current Rohingya crisis.
‘If we call for unity, they (AL) say that unity cannot be forged with BNP,’ he said.
How there could be any such unity with BNP, which would not compromise the country’s interest with anyone in exchange for anything, he asked in a rhetorical question.
Fakhrul said BNP called for building unity with people.
He said they (BNP) would forge unity with people and face this challenge of (Rohingya crisis).
Fakhrul said the government still did not term genocide the killings in Rakhine of Myanmar by its security forces and did not condemn the Myanmar government.
From this it could be understood that they (AL) did politics of subservience and the government was afraid, he said.
Fakhrul lamented that China which once had stood beside repressed and exploited people across the world was failing to understand the Rohingya problems.
He said India which had given shelter Bangladeshi people during liberation war in 1971 and supported Bangladesh in the war also failed to understand the situation.
Fakhrul said veteran politician Kazi Zafar Ahmad was a real patriot and said he always spoke against aggression.
The BNP leader said it was an act of aggression that the way Myanmar was pushing lakhs of its citizens into Bangladesh through genocide.
Former Dhaka University vice-chancellor Emajuddin Ahamed criticised prime minister Sheikh Hasina for her comments made on Friday in  New York that no talk with BNP and Jamaat.
He urged BNP to forge unity without them.
Jatiya Party faction organised the discussion at Institution of Diploma Engineers’, Bangladesh, in the city to mark the second death anniversary of former prime minister and JP faction chairman Kazi Zafar Ahmad.
Presided over by JP acting chairman TIM Fazle Rabbi Chowdhury, the programme was addressed, among others, by its secretary general Mostafa Zamal Haider.
