The Anti-Corruption Commission on Monday filed five cases against six officials of BTCL including its former managing director Abu Syed Khan and eight officials of different international call carriers for embezzling Tk 204.91 crore.

Two ACC officials — SM Saidur Rahman and Nazimuddin — filed the cases with Ramna Police Station, said Aklima Akhtar, duty officer of the police station.

The accused include Mohammad Toufique, member (maintenance and operation) of state-owned Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Ltd (BTCL); and Mahfuzur Rahman, former director of the BTCL; SM Iftekar Ahmed, country representative of an international call carrier company Carria Relation; Mohammad Maksudul Latif, director of MS Power Communication PP Ltd; and its local partner Hasibur Rahman.

Referring to the First Information Report of the case, the ACC officials said, the BTCL officials misappropriated the money in collaboration with the owners of the international call careers.

They also said BTCL signed with the carriers as international organisations, but local people own the carriers.

The carriers also submitted fake documents and bank guarantees when they signed agreement with BTCL officials but the state-run company officials did not examine the documents properly, said the ACC officials.
