During his over five decades of colorful political career, Abdul Hamid was elected Member of Parliament for seven times while Parliament Speaker twice. And this time he is going to adorn Bangabhaban as the country’s 20th President.
The people of Kishoreganj burst into joy on Monday as local lad Hamid was elected the President, helping their impoverished district to retain the presidency.
Born into a farmer’s family on January 1, 1944 at Kamalpur of Mithamoin upazila, Hamid made a wonderful journey to Bangabhaban at a time when the nation looks for someone who can take effective steps to break the country’s prolonged political standoff.
Hamid joined politics in 1959 as a Chhatra League activist and has been a torchbearer of the ideology of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman since then.
He had taken a leading role in the anti-Ayub Movement in 1961 and was imprisoned by Pakistan government for joining the vigorous student movement.
In 1963, he was elected the general secretary of the Students Union of Gurudayal College of Kishoreganj and then its vice-president in 1965. He joined Bangladesh Awami League in 1969.
Hamid was elected a junior most member from Mymensingh-18 constituency in the National Assembly Election of 1970. In the National Election of 1973, he was elected as a Member of Parliament from Kishoregonj-5.  Later, he was elected as Member of Parliament in 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2009 from the Kishoregonj-5 constituency.
In the Seventh Parliament of 1996, he was unanimously elected the Deputy Speaker of Parliament and later became the Speaker. In the Eighth Parliament of 2001, he served as the Deputy Leader of the opposition. In the 9th parliamentary election, he was unanimously elected Speaker of the Parliament on January 25, 2009 for the second term.
Hamid was the founder president of Chattra League, Kishoregonj sub-division in 1964 and vice-president of Chhatra League of Mymensingh in 1966-67.
Hamid took part in the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971 and acted as the chairman of recruiting camp in Meghalaya in India.
He also acted as the commander of the sub-sector of Bangladesh Liberation Force (Mujib Bahini).  He was also the chairman of Muktijuddha Youth Reception Camp at Meghalaya during the Liberation War.
In 1974, he was the vice-president of Kishoreganj district Awami League and from 1978 to 2009 the president of Kishoreganj district Awami League.
He was the President of Kishoreganj District Bar Association for five times during the 1990-96 period.
During 1976-1978, Hamid was imprisoned by the then government after the assassination of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Hamid is married, and a father of three sons and a daughter.
Abdul Hamid passed IA and BA from Gurudayal College of Kishoreganj and LLB from Central Law College under Dhaka University. After LLB, he joined Kishoreganj Bar as an advocate.
For his outstanding contributions to the country’s Independence and Liberation War, Abdul Hamid was conferred upon the Independence Award – 2013.
