 Country’s five private mobile phone operators collectively invested Tk 56,220 crore here as of December last year with GrameenPhone having the highest investment, Posts and Telecommunications Minister told Parliament on Wednesday.
Currently, six mobile phone operators including the state-owned Teletalk are providing telecom services in the country, Sahara Khatun said, responding to a starred tabled question of M Israfil Alam (Noagaon-6)
She informed the House that GrameenPhone invested Tk 21,343 crore during 1997-2012 while Banglalink invested Tk 14,112 crore from 1995 to 2012.
Robi’s investment made from 1997 to 2012 stood at Tk 10,929 crore while that of Citycell Tk 1,047 crore from 1993 to 2012, the Telecom Minister said.
Airtel Bangladesh Limited invested Tk 8,789 crore from 2005 to 2012, she added.
Sahara Khatun said GrameenPhone had sent Tk 3,752 crore abroad as profit during the period of 2003-2012 while Robi sent profit worth Tk 204 crore from 2000-2005.
She also mentioned that no mobile phone company sent profit abroad before 2000.
