The government has taken an initiative to bring some 40,000 street children back to school through financial assistance, said State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki.

“All the disadvantaged children will be included in this programme in phases,” she said while speaking at a seminar organised by Bangladesh Shishu Adhikar (child rights) Forum (BSAF) at the city’s Biam auditorium.

Meher Afroz Chumki said the government is implementing a number of programmes to uphold the rights of children in the country. “The present government is also working to set up a separate department to take care of the rights of children,” she added.

Programme manager of Manusher Jonno Foundation Abdullah Al Mamun presented the keynote paper at the seminar which was attended, among others, by BSAF chairman M Imranul Haque Chowdhury, country director of Terre des Rommes M Mahdudul Haque.
