1 dead, over 50 hurt in BNP-AL clash in Jamalpur

The activists of main opposition BNP and ruling Awami League clashed at Sarishabari Upazila in Jamalpur, leaving one man dead and more than 50 others injured on Tuesday morning.

The violence broke out over placing wreaths at a local memorial for the independence heroes as the nation was observing the Independence Day on Tuesday, police said.

Sarishabari Police Station OC Kamrul Ahsan said the violence began when the activists of the two rival parties brought out processions and were heading for the Freedom Fighters’ Memorial at the Upazila’s Aramnagar Bazar.

He said the law enforcers fired from shotguns and used teargas to control the situation.

Eyewitnesses said activists of the rival parties also exchanged shots during the violence.

Belal Hossain, 45, was declared dead by doctors when he was taken to a local hospital with bullet injuries.

The police official, however, claimed that Belal did not die from police firing.

Ten policemen, including the OC, and nearly 40 activists of Awami League and BNP were injured, he added. They were being treated at a local hospital.

The dead man was a resident of Mulbari village in the area.

Local BNP leaders claimed that Belal was a member of Juba Dal, its youth front.

Additional police forces have been deployed in the area.
