Zillur’s death ‘end of a political episode’: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday categorically said a political episode ended with the death of President M Zillur Rahman.

The premier, also ruling Awami League president, came up with the observation in executive committee meeting at Gano Bhaban in the evening.

Sheikh Hasina said, “Zillur Rahman was a guardian regardless of parties and opinions…people of the country lost the guardian.”

Commemorating his colorful political life, AL president also said democracy was established in the country after 1/11 for his vital role and a political episode ended with his demise.

Later, she dedicated the meeting to the late president.

  1. It’s a pity the late President achieved so little during his tenure, a period that also witnessed a number of serious issues facing the nation. Physically old and frail as he was, the only significent thing I remember about him is his frequent visit abroad for treatment, all at taxpayers’ expense. His total silence on some the controversial issues that plagued the nation prior to his departure only confirmed his lack of ability to contribute anything positive despite his long career as a politician. His contribution to his party AL is understandable but for Bangladesh – not a whole lot. This is just my opinion.

  2. He has made serious error by pardoning known criminals and murderers. Obviously he was told to do this. But this makes him complicit in this action and he will be remembered for this more than anything else he did as a President.

    • Zillur Rahman was a good man but a lame duck president and during his rare good-health days as president he never succeeded in proving himself as head of state representing all people. He remained very much an Awami League henchman controlled by supremo Hasina till his last day..
