Withdraw cases against BNP leaders in 24 hrs: SCBA

Supreme Court Bar AssociationDhaka, Mar 4 (UNB) – President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) advocate Zainul Abedin on Monday gave the government 24 hours to withdraw the fresh cases filed against BNP leaders, including its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

The SCBA president issued the ultimatum at a press conference held at his office.

In a note of warning, Zainul threatened that they, together with all legal practitioners of all courts, including the Supreme Court, will launch a tougher movement unless the cases against BNP leaders are withdrawn within 24 hours.

“The movement will force the government to quit power,” the pro-BNP lawyer added.

Terming ‘false, fabricated and baseless’ the cases filed by the government against over 1000 opposition leaders over Saturday’s violence in the city, Zainul Abedin strongly condemned and protested the filing of the cases.

Five cases were filed against BNP leaders, including its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed, with different police stations in connection with Saturday’s violence in the city.

Zainul also accused the government of destroying independence of the judiciary, saying, “The government is interfering in the judiciary.”

Referring to Tuesday’s hartal called by BNP, he said they will bring out a procession in support of the hartal on the Supreme Court premises around 10am on the day.
