White House consoles Xulhaz family

US president Barak Obama and slain Xulhaz Mannan. 1The White House has written to the family of murdered Bangladeshi LGBT magazine editor Xulhaz Mannan to extend its condolences.

“Michelle and I join you in heartbreak and grief, and we extend our deepest condolences,” read the letter issued on 5 May 2016 to the family of Xulhaz Mannan who was killed on 25 April in his house by some unknown assailants.

An employee of the US Agency for International Development, Xulhaz served the US embassy in Dhaka.

The Prothom Alo obtained a copy of the letter.

“The pain of a loss like this is indescribable. Guided by his commitment to shaping a more just and equal future across Bangladesh, Xulhaz devoted his life to service. I hope it brings you some measure of solace to know that his courageous, compassionate spirit will endure through all who knew and loved him, and in all who are inspired by the difference he made- now and for generations to come,” read the letter.

President Obama also said in the letter that he was holding the Xulhaz family in his thoughts during this extraordinarily difficult time.
