Terming Bangladesh a friendly country, Pakistan has said it is closely following the political developments in Bangladesh and thinks the recent trials of war criminals have added to its current instability.

“While it’s not Pakistan’s policy to interfere in the affairs of any country, we’ve noted the concerns raised by the international community and human rights organisations on the way recent trials have been conducted which have added to the current instability in Bangladesh,” said a media release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pakistan dated December 13.

It said as a friendly country and fellow Saarc member state, Pakistan is closely following the political developments as they unfold inside Bangladesh. “We wish the brotherly people of Bangladesh well and hope that spirit of reconciliation and an atmosphere, free of violence, will prevail.”

Meanwhile, the issue of trial of war criminals also came up in the regular weekly media briefing of the Pakistan Foreign Ministry.

One of the questions was – What are your views on the credibility of the tribunal instituted to carry out the trial of Quader Mollah, leader of Jamat-e-Islami in Bangladesh?

In response, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesman Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry said, “Bangladesh is a brotherly country. While it is not our policy to interfere in the affairs of other countries, we’ve noted that different international human rights organisations have expressed their concerns on the way the trials have been conducted.”
