War Crimes Trial: Mojaheed to file review Wednesday

The lawyers of death row war crimes inmate Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed on Tuesday said they would file a petition to the Appellate Division seeking review of each earlier verdict that upheld the death sentence for their client.
They informed newsmen about theri move after meeting Mojaheed at Dhaka Central Jail.
Mojaheed’s after coming out of the jail about 4:00pm informed the waiting lawyers that
Referring Mojaheed, his lawer Md Shishir Monir said that his client was a student during the liberation war in 1971 and a student cannot be a commander of a para- militia force like Al-Badr.
During the cross examination at the tribunal the investigation officer said Mojaheed’s name was absent in the lists of Al-Badr, Al-Shams or Razakar forces, then how he could be the commander of Al-Badr force, said Monir.
He said to be a commander of the force some authority had to appoint Mojaheed but the prosecution could not submit any documents or oral testimony which testifies that who had appointed Mojaheed, when, and where.
It was the second meeting of the lawyers with Mojaheed, the secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami.
The Supreme Court released its full verdict upholding his death penalty on September 30.
The family members of Mojaheed met him at Dhaka Central Jail on October 9 morning.
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on October 1, issued the warrants for the execution of Mojaheed and Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.
On June 16, the apex court had pronounced a brief verdict upholding Mojaheed’s death sentence. On July 17, 2013, the ICT-2 had sentenced Mojaheed to death finding him guilty of five war crimes charges including his complicity in killing intellectuals towards the fag end of the Liberation War.
