The High Court will deliver its verdict any day regarding a writ petition that challenged the legality of Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration as a political party.
A three-member HC bench led by Justice M Moazzam Hossain revealed this on conclusion of hearing on the petition Wednesday.
Bangladesh Tariqat Federation’s secretary general Rezaul Haque Chandpuri and 24 others filed the petition on January 25, 2009.
A division bench of the HC headed by Justice ABM Khairul Haque on January 27, 2009 issued a rule asking the Election Commission and Jamaat authorities to explain why the registration of the party should not be declared illegal.
Barrister Tania Amir appeared for the writ petitioners while Barrister Abdur Razzaq argued for Jamaat and Advocate Mohsen Rashid represented EC.
Hearing of the petition began on April 9.
The EC listed Jamaat as a registered political party on November 4, 2008.
