Vandalism in Gulshan market

There was large-scale vandalism in a market in Dhaka’s Gulshan area on Tuesday, triggered by a row with a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader over car parking.

BCL leader Sohel got embroiled in an altercation with the security staff of the Gulshan-2 Dhaka City Corporation market on Tuesday night over car parking, Gulshan Police Station OC Rafiqul Islam told bdnews24.com.

The police identified the man as BCL Gulshan Thana unit leader but did not elaborate.

A security staff, Mominul Islam, said his colleague, Atiqul Ilsam Mintu, had tried to stop a private car heading for the parking area, as it was being driven on the wrong side of the road.

“The driver ignored the signal and drove in. Those inside the car came out and began beating up Atiqul,” Islam said.

The fled when nearby shopkeepers and other members of the security staff rushed to aid Atiqul’s aid, Islam said.

A while later, about 70 armed youths came and began smashing the shops. “They fired some shots in the air. They fled when a gold shop sounded their alarm.”

OC Rafiqul Islam said he had heard about shots being fired.
