Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today apprehended that election might not be held in the country even in ten years if any unconstitutional government comes to power.
“There will be no democracy or election in the country if any unconstitutional government takes over,” she said at an Iftar party organized by Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) at Jatiya Press Club here.
The Prime Minister said, “The constitution has been amended to uphold the democratic process in light of the Supreme Court verdict. So we have to uphold the constitution and continue the democratic process.”
Pointing out her government steps to ensure press freedom and right to information, Sheikh Hasina urged the media to hold their pen for the truth and refrain from any practice which may destroy democracy.
Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, PM’s Media Advisor and BFUJ President Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, BFUJ secretary general Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan and DUJ president Omar Faruk, among others, spoke on the occasion while DUJ secretary Saban Mahmud conducted the meeting.
Senior journalists ABM Musa and Habibur Rahman Milon, editor of the Independent Mahbubul Alam, PM’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad and journalist leader Monjurul Ahsan Bubul were on the dais.
Ministers, PM’s advisors, secretaries, senior government officials, attorney general, vice chancellors of different universities, leaders of different professional bodies, including Jatiya Press Club and Dhaka Reporters Unity, attended the Iftar.
The Prime Minister said, her government believes that to make democracy meaningful there must be freedom of speech and free media. “Bangabandhu incorporated the fundamental rights of the citizen in the constitution after independence and we have always upheld it,” she said.
Let’s declare Hasina, the PM for life. Like her father wanted to be the President for life. This woman is nothing but a disaster for Bangladesh. Unfortunately the opposition is also bunch of weaklings, mini dictators. Bangladeshi people may have to start everything all over again. I can only see disaster with Hasina backed by RAW and Indian government.
