UN refugee summit: PM to urge permanent solution for migrant crisis

During a press briefing on Sunday, the Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali said that the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will call upon the leaders of the world to work towards finding a permanent solution to the refugee crisis during her meetings in New York.

The PM is set to speak at a plenary session of the ‘UN summit on refugees and migrants’ on September 19th and later on September 20th at the ‘Leaders’ summit on refugees’ along with the US President Barack Obama.

Besides speaking the summit on the 19th of September, the Prime Minister will also co-chair a roundtable on ‘Global Compact for Safe, Regular and Orderly Migration: Towards Realizing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Achieving Full Respect for the Human Rights of Migrants’, alongside her Swedish counterpart.

Minister Mahmood Ali also added that the PM will emphasize on Bangladesh’s position on the refugee issues and also mention about the 10 million Bangladeshi refugees who took shelter in India during the 1971 War of Independence.

Bangladesh takes particular interest in them as the current chair of the Global Forum for Migration and Development. Dhaka will host the Forum’s ninth meeting in December.
