Two ministers get legal notice for comments on CJ

Food Minister Qamrul Islam and Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque on Monday received a legal notice from Supreme Court lawyer SM Zulfiqure Ali requesting them to clarify their comments about the Chief Justice and war criminal Mir Quasem Ali’s appeal.

The two ministers were asked to explain within 24 hours as to why their March 5 comments about the CJ and Mir Quasem Ali’s appeal should not be declared illegal, unconstitutional and considered as offence equal to court contempt.

Zulfiqure Ali said that he will file a writ petition with the High Court seeking necessary orders on them if they
fail to clarify their comments within 24 hours.

Earlier, at a March 5 discussion, Food Minister Qamrul Islam said that the appeal in Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mir Quasem Ali’s case should be reheard by a ‘reconstituted’ Appellate Division bench of the Supreme Court that does not include the Chief Justice.

Qamrul, state minister for law during the formation of the tribunal in 2010, said that the Chief Justice made some observations in an open court that raised questions about the role of the prosecutors and investigators’ in the trial.

AKM Mozammel Haque also made some comments during the same discussion programme held in the capital on March 5.
