Two Bangladeshi nationals killed by BSF while trying to enter India

The incident took place Sunday night, 200 yards off Charaldanga border in Gumastha Upazila when a gang of smugglers entered Indian soil after breaching the barbed fence skirting the frontier.

On Monday a joint inspection of the site was made by a BSF-BGB team, Hussain said.

He said that the BSF troops stationed at Anuradhapura in Maldah district of India opened fire on a group of smugglers who had managed to sneak into India after cutting through the barbed wire.

When initial resistance from BSF evoked an attack from the smugglers, the troops returned fire in response, killing 35 year old Charaildanga resident Jobdul Hoque Bhanu and 35 year old Bedpur resident Shahjahan Ali Bhutto.

The rest of the smugglers managed to slip back to Bangladesh.

Lt Col Hussain also said that the BSF recovered a pliers capable of cutting barbed wire and a sickle from the site.

The bodies are now in Maldah morgue for post mortem. They will be returned to Bangladesh authorities on Tuesday, he said.
