Tuba workers threaten hartal

Tuba group needs around Tk4.13 crore to pay all of the outstanding amount to the workers

The Tuba Shromik Shongram Committe has threatened to announce tougher programmes including hartal if all the dues of the Tuba Group workers are not paid by Wednesday.

The agitating workers made the warning during their besiege programme of the BGMEA building on Tuesday afternoon.

The workers of Tuba Group have laid a siege on the building of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) to press home their demands.

The besiege programme started around 11:50am and continued till 1:40pm.

Police barred the workers when they reached at Karwan Bazar around 11am. They locked in a scuffle with the law enforcers but then the workers moved forward defying the police obstruction.

In the siege programme, a worker threatened that she would commit suicide if their dues are not paid by tomorrow.

The workers also demanded that the dues be paid to the workers at the factory where they have been observing a hunger strike.

On Sunday, the workers of five garment factories of Tuba Group rejected the BGMEA decision of paying their dues in two phases.

At least 1,200 workers from five factories under the Tuba Group have been on a hunger strike for eight consecutive days at Hossain Market in the capital’s Badda area, demanding the payment of three months’ wages, overtime and Eid bonuses.

The five factories under the Tuba Group are Tuba Fashion, Tuba Textile, Mita Design, Taif Design and Bughsan Garments. The group needs around Tk4.13 crore to pay all of the outstanding amount to the workers.
