News - Train torched in Ctg; 4 railway employees suspended
Five bogies of an intercity train were gutted as unidentified miscreants set those on fire at Chittagong Railway Station early Tuesday.

Ahsan Habib, officer-in-charge of Chittagong Railway Police Station, said the train, ‘Suborna Express’, which runs on Chittagong-Dhaka route, was kept at the station’s platform when miscreants torched it at about 5am.

Five bogies were burned to ashes before the railway employees doused the blaze, he said.

However, there was no report of any casualty in the arson attack as the train having no passenger was kept at the platform.

Local high railway officials visited the spot in the morning.

The train was scheduled to depart for the capital at 7am today (Tuesday). But, it along with passengers left for its destination at 8:30am after the authorities replaced the five burnt bogies, said Ahsan Habib.

Meanwhile, police detained two people — Asgar Ahmed and Mithu — from the railway station area suspecting their involvement in the arson attack.

Besides, station manager Mahbubur Rahman, Habildar Manjurul Alam of GRP, and guards Raihan and Jashim Uddin were suspended for dereliction of duty.

Divisional Railway Manager (East zone) Sukumar Bhoumik said two probe committees have been formed to look into the arson attack. The probe panels have been asked to submit their reports as soon as possible, he said.

The extent of loss caused by the fire will be Tk 2 crore, Sukumar added.
