Anti-election activists vandalised a train at Ishwardi railway station in Ishwardi upazila  on Saturday, leaving 10 passengers injured as violence flared up in different parts of the country on the eve of the 10th general election.

Witnesses said some BNP activists swooped on Rajshahi-bound ‘Mahananda Express’ at Iswardi station around 1:40 pm and vandalised the compartments, injuring the 10 passengers.

In another incident, at least 30 people were injured, some with bullets, in a fierce clash between the activists of BNP and Chhatra League near the railway station at noon.

The clash broke out when some BCL men brought out a procession in the upazila town around 1 pm on the occasion of its 66th founding anniversary. The clash continued for two hours amid bomb blasts and exchange of gunshots.

Among the injured, 17 were admitted to upazila health complex.

Upazila health complex medical officer Dr Firoza Parvin said the condition of those suffered bullet wounds is critical.

The opposition men went berserk during the clash vandalising around 30 shops, hotels, shopping complexes and banks, including branches of Bank Asia, Islami Bank, BRAC Bank, Uttara bank and Agrani Bank.

Later, police brought the situation under control by firing 50 rounds of blank shots.

Joint forces launched a drive following the incident and arrested 12 people from different areas.
