Teenage housewife killed for Boishakhi sari

One of the most sensual attires of a woman is undoubtedly sari in Bengali culture. Every woman desires to wear a colourful new saree to celebrate Pohela Boishahk, the first day of Bangla new year. It is the tradition. But it of course is very tragic when a woman is to give her life for a sari.

Recently a 19-year-old housewife, also an expected mother, has been killed brutally by her mother-in-law in Joypurhat as she demanded a sari on the occasion of Pohela Boishahk.

The deceased was Rima Akter, wife of Hasan Ali of Koachnapur village in Sadar upazila.

Sources said Rima, daughter of Majedur Rahman of Charjagadishpur village, had been married off with Hasan ten months back, a madrasa background educated person.

After the marriage, Hasan was supposed to be given a motorcycle as dowry before Eid-ul-Azha.

But Hazan used to quarrel with Rima for the bike to get it immediately.

The family members also of Hasan got locked in altercation always over the issue with Rima, said locals.

Ahead of Pohela Boishahk, Abdul Halim, father-in-law of Rima bought a new saree for her sister-in-law Hasna Khatun on Saturday.

Rima also demanded a saree to Halim to celebrate the Pohela Boishahk.

Popi Khatun, the mother-in-law of Rima became ferocious as she came to know about the demand of her.

She started quarrel with Rima over the issue and at one stage she pressed pillow against her mouth leaving her dead on the spot.

After the incident, Popi tried to say Rima committed suicide. Rima’s husband was also outside of home during the incident.

On information, Rima’s family members went to the spot yesterday morning and claimed that she had been killed. They informed the incident to police.

The police recovered the body and arrested the father-in-law and mother-in-law of Rima.

Farid Hossain, officer-in-charge Sadar police station, said the arrested were sent to the Joypurhat court where they confessed the killing.

They were sent to sail, said the OC.

Hasan Ali, brother of Rima and locals demanded exemplary punishment of the killers.
